Situated on the northern side of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, the Buhoma region is one of the four most remarkable tracking areas you must experience during mountain gorilla adventures in Uganda. As the oldest trailhead for gorilla trekking in Uganda, this region holds significant historical importance.

Buhoma is a pioneer in gorilla trekking within Bwindi Forest and Uganda at large. It hosted the very first group of gorilla trekkers in 1993 when the Mubare gorilla family was opened for tracking. Currently, the habituated gorilla families in this sector include Rushegura, Mubare, Katwe, and Habinyanja.
